Isobel MacKay

Isobel opened her eyes slowly, languishing in the feel of the silken sheets against her naked body.

She turned to look at Robert, but found herself alone. His side of the bed was pulled up and neatly tucked in. She supposed the life of a laird never stopped, and there was certainly plenty of cleanup to be done after the ball. She considered rising, but enjoyed the moment for just a little while longer.

She pulled his pillow across and breathed deeply of his scent, stroking it idly with one finger. She felt so different this morning from her usual self. So… happy. Isobel smiled and lay back again, staring at the ceiling. Yes, she was happy. How strange, to find happiness with a laird after all, and one as strange as Robert. And yet the night before had made everything clear to her. She was his; body and soul. He’d found a way to disarm her.

To pull down her guard, as well as her undergarments.

The thought was enough to make her blush. The night before had certainly been long, as they fed their insatiable passion time after time, and she gave an almost feline stretch at the memory. She’d seen a different side to him. It was the lairdly side; the man used to giving orders and having them obeyed. He’d radiated with a strange power that she found she couldn’t resist. And yet, through it all, he remained gentle and tender to her needs. He made her feel cherished in a way she never had before, and wanted more of it.

Then, of course, amid her happiness was the sharp reminder of deceit.

Robert deserved more from her. Certainly more than she was giving him now, which was her body and little else. He deserved to know the truth about who she was and why she was here. Only… would the truth drive him away? To know that she was betrothed to another laird, even if it was against her will, and as vile as the man was? Not to mention her reluctance to involve Robert in the plots of MacKay’s; her father would chew Laird McPhee up and spit him out without a second thought.

And yet, she couldn’t deny that Robert deserved at least some measure of truth.

The door opened, interrupting her thoughts, and Robert entered. His eyes fell upon her, and a smile spread across his face. She smiled back, feeling her heart race faster, and allowed him to lean down and kiss her. It was a slow, sensual kiss, exactly what one would expect after the night they’d shared, and yet she felt her knees grow weak and her stomach dance with nervous want. How did this man do such things to her?

He pulled back and smiled again, looking at her with such deep warmth that she flushed. Yes, she could certainly get used to this.

“Good morning, my wild warrior woman,” he whispered. “Ye are bonny.”

“Good morning, Robert of the forest,” she said. “And ye’re only saying that because I’m naked.
